Understanding quotes, orders, and subscriptions terminology

AppDirect updated several labels across the platform so they match industry-standard SaaS and commerce terminology. The goal is simpler navigation and clearer conversations with customers and internal teams.

Important: These are naming changes only. Workflows, data, business logic, and REST API contracts are unchanged.

The three terms to know

After this update, three labels describe most of what you work with day to day:

TermWhat it meansWhat it used to be called
SubscriptionAn ongoing recurring service for a customerOrder
OrderA single purchase or transaction eventPurchase
QuoteA sales proposal, deal or pricing configuration for a customerOpportunity

Quote Version is the label for the shared end-customer quote snapshot (previously shown as Quote (V2)).

Think of it this way: a subscription is the ongoing relationship, an order is a specific transaction that creates, modifies or renews a subscription, and a quote is the proposal that may lead to one.

Changes to Quotes

Previously, Opportunities and Quotes were separate areas. They are now combined on a single Quotes listing page with two tabs:

TabWhat it contains
Net NewNew quote proposals for customers (formerly Opportunities)
Upgrades & DowngradesQuote flows for subscription changes (formerly the separate Quotes section)

All existing records remain available. Nothing was removed — only the navigation was simplified.

Where you will see updates

When this update is enabled for your marketplace, labels change consistently across these areas:

  • Navigation and page titles — Left sidebar menus, page headers, and list views in the Marketplace Manager, Customer, Sales Support, Reseller, and Company Admin portals
  • Filters and table columns — List filters and column headers on the Subscriptions list (formerly Orders) and Orders list (formerly Purchases)
  • Quotes screens — Unified Quotes listing, Quote instead of Opportunity, and Quote Version on quote snapshot views
  • Billing and Reseller pages — User and company billing tabs, plus Reseller list pages, use the same updated labels
  • Notifications and links — In-app messages and links use the new terminology

ID fields: On the Subscriptions list, the Purchase Order ID column replaces the former ID column. The Orders list keeps its existing ID field.

URLs: Legacy paths redirect automatically when the feature is enabled:

Old URLRedirects to
/opportunities/v2/quotes
/quotes/v2/quotes/versions

Bookmarks and saved links continue to work.

📝 Note: There are no changes to accessibility, keyboard navigation, or ARIA behavior beyond the label and route updates.

What is not changing (yet)

To avoid disrupting integrations, some areas keep their existing names for now:

AreaPhase 1 status
REST APIsNo change. /opportunities endpoints continue to work as they do today.
Report field namesUnchanged in Phase 1 by default. However, you can update names by customizing the report or a report template.
Webhook payload fieldsUnchanged in Phase 1

New GraphQL APIs will use the updated naming (quotes). Developer documentation will explain how API field names map to the new UI labels.

Future phases will update report and webhook naming. New report versions will be released alongside existing ones, with a transition period so your team can migrate integrations. We will announce timelines in advance.

Rollout and enablement

This update rolls out in phases:

  1. User interface — Live for new self-serve marketplaces; existing marketplaces are enabled progressively.
  2. Reports — Field and column renames in a future phase.
  3. Webhooks — Payload field renames in a future phase, coordinated with reports.
  4. APIs — REST endpoints unchanged; new GraphQL APIs use updated naming.

📝 Note: This feature is not enabled by default. Contact your AppDirect technical representative to request enablement for your marketplace.

Localization and custom labels

  • Custom string overrides — If you use custom string overrides for specific keys, those overrides are not affected by this update.
  • Translated marketplaces — Non-English translations follow the localization migration path when the feature is enabled.
  • Keeping old names — You can retain previous terminology by customizing translation files in your localization settings. Contact your marketplace manager or AppDirect support for assistance.

Frequently asked questions

Will my existing integrations break?

No. REST API endpoints, webhook payloads, and report exports are not affected by Phase 1 UI changes. Your integrations continue to work without changes.

Will my localization customizations be affected?

Custom translation files take precedence over the new default names. Your custom labels are preserved.

What happened to the Quotes section that was separate from Opportunities?

It is now the Upgrades & Downgrades tab on the unified Quotes listing page. All records are still accessible.

Do I need to update bookmarks?

No. Old URLs redirect to the new paths automatically.
